From Vikings to Hygge and Happiness

Exploring Denmark’s Cultural Journey

A cultural talk from the fearsome Vikings to the cozy concept of hygge, and delving into the intriguing question: What went wrong?

Let’s start with the Vikings. When we think of Denmark, images of fierce warriors sailing the seas come to mind. But beyond their reputation for conquest, the Vikings were also skilled traders, explorers, and settlers. Their influence spread far and wide, shaping not only Denmark’s history but also that of Europe and beyond.

On our way through history we will delve through the wars with Sweden and the Second World War. Denmark’s occupation by Nazi Germany was a dark chapter in its history. Brave acts of resistance, such as the rescue of the Danish Jews, exemplified the resilience and compassion of the Danish people.

But let’s shift our focus to something more cheerful – hygge. This uniquely Danish concept encompasses coziness, warmth, and togetherness. Whether it’s enjoying a cup of coffee with friends or snuggling up with a good book by the fireplace, hygge is about finding joy in simple pleasures.

Now, onto a puzzling question: What went wrong? Despite facing adversity throughout history, Danes consistently rank among the happiest people in the world. So, where did it all go awry?

Perhaps the answer lies in Denmark’s commitment to trust and democracy. The Danish welfare state provides a safety net for its citizens, fostering a sense of security and well-being. Moreover, Denmark’s democratic institutions promote transparency, equality, and participation – values that contribute to a thriving society.

But let’s not forget that no nation is without its challenges. From economic inequality to environmental concerns, Denmark grapples with issues that demand attention and action.

Cheers Copenhagen!

A spirited cultural talk on Danish drinking traditions

Join us on this colorful and lively cultural talk as we explore history through the lens of Danish drinking traditions. We’ll combine tasting, chatting, and learning as we delve into the rich tapestry of brewing beer and wine throughout the centuries in the Denmark.

You’ll hear about the beverages poured into the glasses of the poor, kings, nobles, and virtuous monks. Despite the church’s strict rules and condemnation of alcohol, it remained intertwined with Danish society, often shaping events both good and bad.

Take, for instance, the bombardment of Copenhagen by the British in 1807, a national tragedy that led to the transformation of Nyhavn into a lively hub. Today, we can hardly imagine Copenhagen without its decorated bars and restaurants along the sunny side of this harbor promenade, once frequented by tough sailors spending their hard-earned money.

We’ll also explore the paradoxical legacy of King Christian the 4th, renowned for his architectural achievements yet criticized for his economic administration. Did you know he had 35,000 drinking glasses made for his crowning ceremony and replaced fountain water with wine?

Our talk will treat you to a journey through beer and wine traditions from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and into modern times. And, of course, we can’t forget about Carlsberg – a fascinating blend of innovation, quality, and family drama.

So, listen closely as we raise our glasses to toast the vibrant history and traditions of Danish drinking culture. Skål! (Cheers!)

Foodies’ Favourite Food Talk

Our “Exploring Danish Cuisine” cultural talk delves into the rich tapestry of Danish culinary traditions, offering insights into the evolution of Nordic Cuisine and the concept of New Nordic Food. Since the early 2000s, Nordic Cuisine has gained global acclaim, thanks to the pioneering efforts of visionary chefs who sought to revolutionize Danish gastronomy.

Throughout the discussion, we’ll explore the origins and impact of New Nordic Food, examining how it has transformed Danish eating habits and elevated traditional dishes to new heights. From the iconic open-faced sandwich, known as ‘smørrebrød’, to delectable delicacies like marinated herring and Danish liver pate with pickled beets and bacon, we’ll tantalize your taste buds with a diverse array of flavors.

But our exploration doesn’t stop there. We’ll also delve into the realm of Danish sweets, sampling treats like salty liquorice, Danish pastry, and the irresistibly delicious “flødeboller” – crispy wafers filled with whipped egg whites and sugar, coated in dark chocolate. Complementing these delectable sweets, we’ll also introduce you to quintessential Danish beverages, such as beer, aged wine, or buckthorn juice, offering a complete sensory experience of Danish culinary culture.

Sara was our tour guide in Copenhagen, she introduced us to the city and showed us how beautiful Copenhagen is. During the 4 hour walk we stopped at the palace and learned about Royal family, visited university, some historic churches, learned about history of Jewish community in Denmark and other sites (sorry, little Mermaid was not on our agenda). Sara took us to the hidden spots which we otherwise would miss, gave us great recommendations for our stay in the city. We absolutely enjoyed the tour and the city. We want to come back!
